Who Am I?

Sohheon Yang

Welcome! I am on a journey to becoming a learning scientist with an expertise in education for children. I am a second-year Ph.D. student in Instructional Systems Technology at Indiana University. My research interests include Technology Integration for Early Childhood, Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics (STEAM) Education, Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK), Equitable Learning, and Feminist Methodology. My ultimate goal is to dedicate myself to reducing educational inequality and improving the lives of children worldwide through learning.

When I was a teacher...
(one of my favorite pictures that my student took when we were playing together)

I was an early childhood education teacher for four years in Ewha kindergarten, a research-oriented kindergarten that has been educating children since 1914. One of my achievements was designing, implementing, and evaluating a curriculum that integrated technologies such as chroma-key, AR, hologram, and making activities based on the interests and development of five-year-old children. This was the milestone that began my professional pathway dedicated to promoting integrating technology into education.

I received my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Early Childhood Education from Ewha Womans University in South Korea. I have been fortunate enough to have ample research experiences related to remote learning and AI education in my Master’s degree, all of which have served as stepping stones towards my final goals.

In my first year of my Ph.D. studies, as a Teaching Technology Lab (TTL) manager, I have worked with pre-service and in-service teachers to lead them to learn and practice how to incorporate educational technology into their teaching and learning effectively. My responsibilities comprised three key areas: assisting the W200 class, working with local schools for students’ field experience, and leading STEAM night events for local communities with technology integration.

In my second year, I am an associate instructor for W200, a course designed to provide pre-service teachers with knowledge, skills, and experiences to enable them to integrate technology effectively and appropriately in the classroom and beyond. I'm also working on a research project called ReCT, which focuses on integrating computational thinking into K-2 literacy, with faculty and graduate students of Indiana University, Iowa State University, and Purdue University.

I love to study with and meet researchers within and outside the field of education. In my free time, I love to box, run, walk, hike, and listen to music. To learn more about my professional and educational experiences, please see my CV.
